Can Reverse Osmosis Remove Pharmaceuticals From Water? You Mean Tap Water Contains Drugs

May 13, 2012 at 5:27 PM • Posted in healthy eatingNo comments yet

Can reverse osmosis remove pharmaceuticals from water? Why would households be asking this question.

Well, the fact is that antibiotics, sex hormones, anti-convulsant are examples of drugs that in the past have been found in tap water despite the water purification process conducted by your local water authority.

Households were perhaps ignorant to this fact until the findings of the study by the Associated Press was revealed. This highly publicized study conducted across 24 major metropolitan cities found pharmaceuticals in water supply of at least 41 million people.

Now people critical of this study may hit back and say the pharmaceuticals found were only in trace amounts. That may be true but think about the long term effect this could have on your health as you drink tap water that has drugs in it.

Fortunately, there is no need to panic. There are water purification products capable of giving you cleaner, safer drinking water. Since reverse osmosis filtration systems were once very popular, people have been wondering ifreverse osmosis remove pharmaceuticals from water.

The answer is, not effectively. Reverse osmosis water filters are capable of removing contaminants that are heavier than or larger than a molecule of water. However, since some pharmaceuticals in water supply have dissolved in water and hence not lot larger than it, reverse osmosis systems are not very effective against them.

You might be wondering if chlorine is effective? No. The chlorination conducted at your municipal water reservoir is excellent for killing bacteria but not for ridding drugs in water.

Activated carbon filters with a multimedia blocks are the way to go. They are capable of removing small very small contaminants including the drugs in water. Plus, they remove many small synthetic chemicals (such herbicides and pesticides) that reverse osmosis cannot remove.

One great way to spot an excellent activated water filter is to check for its NSF rating. NSF is a body that certifies water treatment products among other things. If a product is NSF certified, you can be assured that it ishas achieved a certain standard.

To remove pharmaceuticals from water supply, look for filters that have a NSF 53 rating. The NSF website has a database of filters matching this description.

So look for a quality activated carbon filter if you want to rid your tap water of drugs. I am sure you don’t want your family especially your children consuming drug-contaminated water. Their health my depend on your decision to get a quality water filter today.

A good and healthy body leads to a sound mind which in turn gets you peace. A balanced diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle; however, the concept of a balanced diet varies from individuals to individuals. One needs to understand the nutrition he specifically lacks.

When building muscles or on a strict work out regime one needs to incorporate Proteins in their daily diet. Moreover, it is advisable to cut carbohydrates or at least minimize their consumption. For such people a diet as mentioned above becomes a balanced diet.

In Proteins too there are different brands and variations available. The best protein derivative is the Whey Supplements. And, in Whey powder too, the best type is the Whey Protein Isolate.

Amino Acids are building blocks of Proteins. The human body is incapable of producing it on its own. It is received by the body from the protein intake of our diet. Most of us are fitness oriented and aim to follow a healthy lifestyle where one can work out regularly and stay healthy and increase longevity of this mortal life.

However, fitness oriented people deplete the proteins much quicker than regular folk who do not intend to work out and hence, they can do without supplements. whey protein isolate contributes to the body by supplying it with all the important amino acids and important proteins.

What makes Whey Isolate a great supplement is the presence of this compound called Leucine. Leucine helps the muscles to grow well and burns up fat in the body during the absorption process. There are plenty of other supplements that contain Leucine; however, its concentration is the purest and highest in Whey nutrition Isolate.

Compared to milk, meat and other supplements Whey Protein Isolate has no fat content. Moreover, products like Soya have high a high dosage of Leucine which is 50 percent lesser than that found in Protein Isolate.

In addition to that, Whey Protein Isolate is super low in fat content and gets absorbed at a very fast rate during the process of Digestion. Fitness experts understand the importance of the post work out meal, which is crucial in providing the body with adequate nutrition that helps in the building on muscles.

Nutrient-rich foods

May 12, 2012 at 8:45 AM • Posted in healthy eatingNo comments yet

The latest buzzword in healthful eating is not low-calorie, low- sodium or low-fat: It’s “nutrient-rich.”

What’s nutrient-rich eating? Just consider a 100 Calorie Pack of Hostess Twinkie Bites. Sure, it only contains 100 calories, 2.5 grams fat, 1 gram saturated fat and 160 milligrams of sodium in three tiny cakes, but what kind of nutritional reward do you get for that 100-calorie investment? Check out the ingredient list and you’ll find a string of processed, refined ingredients, cuing you to the fact that those 100 calories are basically empty ones.
Compare that to a 100-calorie bowl of fresh strawberries, containing two cups of strawberry halves packed with fiber, vitamin C, folate, potassium and manganese, along with a cache of other minerals and vitamins and health-protective plant compounds. See the nutrient-rich difference?

Nutrient-rich foods have a high nutrient-to-calorie ratio, making them nutrition bargains, rather than only calorie, fat or sodium bargains.

While it’s good to keep your intake of calories, fat, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium under control, you can do that the nutrient-rich way or the nutrient-poor way. The nutrient-rich foods approach is fostered by the Nutrient Rich Foods Coalition, a partnership of researchers, communication experts and agricultural commodities working together to help people live a more healthful lifestyle.

Adam Drewnowski, director for the Center for Obesity Research and Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington and principal researcher for NRFC, said: “We have an overweight and undernourished public. People are consuming too many empty calories. We need to shift to a nutrient-rich tipping point with foods that have more nutrients per calorie and by making each calorie count more.”

Here are some tips to infuse your diet with nutrient-rich foods:

* Focus on whole foods — foods and ingredients that often don’t come in fancy packaging, such as produce and fresh meats.

* Pile your plate high with a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

* Opt for a variety of whole grains in breads, side dishes and cereals.

* Tap into legumes, including lentils, soybeans, dried peas and a variety of beans for a nutrient-rich protein source.

* Instead of refined, processed breakfast cereal, try steel-cut oatmeal with fruit, nuts and low-fat milk.

* When it comes to packaged foods, read the ingredients list and nutrition facts panel to make the best choices.

* Keep your portions under control in order to make food choices nutrition-calorie bargains.

* Look for nutrient-rich foods when dining out, such as sandwiches made with lean meat and whole grains or grilled fish with vegetables.

* Be careful of drinking empty calories, such as sweetened beverages.

A pro vitmanin is a nutrient that is turned into a vitamin by the body.

The most efficient manner for a toddler to get enough Vitamin A is to make him/her drink carrot juice. Milk has a multiplier effect on the conversion of carotene into vitamin A mixing both juices helps kids and is prefectly safe

Carrots are used in 100′s of different dishes and drinks. For instance a survey in Germany revealed that carrots constitute 10% of their vegetable consumption. If<_p_>if you are jucing carrots, pick the kind that has the most carotene. Luckily because carotene has such a singular color it is straight forward to find out how much carotene is in your drink by looking at it s color.

Loosely speaking young carrots are low in carotene. Carrot juice is fat soluble meaning that it dissolve in fat and not water. What that means is that is has a longer shelf life than other nutrients.

Nursing mothers are advised to drink carrot milk as it helps with the quality of their breast milk. snacking on carrots has a positive result on babies for expecting mothers. Non fattening, a good sized carrot has adequate pro-vitamin A to fulfill you every day essential for carotene.

The early Greeks used carrots to cure some illnesses. Another reason carrot juice is a great way to ingest vitamin A is that it contains a lot less fat than eggs and butter which are also beneficial sources for vitamin A

The word we typically use to describe anything we eat is food. It’s a word we learn very early in life, because it’s something we rely on every day. We soon learn all of the different ways that food is prepared, as well as it’s contents. Is the food processed? Was it cooked or raw? Which nutrients does it contain? What’s the balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat? Soon enough, we come to recognize food as necessary. However, it can actually be dangerous!

Believe it or not, physical symptoms can appear after certain foods are eaten. This can be the result of the body not processing the food correctly. If your meal plan is off balance in any way, the problems can complicate and form long periods of discomfort or even disease.

The immune system of a human body can misidentify a perfectly harmless nutrient as a foreign body threatening to destroy the body. The alarm is sounded and the body goes on high-alert to try and defend against the danger. It’s not so much that the food is endangering the body, but rather the reaction by the body’s desire to fight off the perceived invasion is what can be dangerous and cause the symptoms. When this happens, we call it an allergic reaction.

In some cases, reactions can be so severe that a person dies from it. Allergies to peanuts, for example, can be quite severe. In fact, some people can react to just the smell of peanut butter! In other instances, the body doesn’t process food correctly. An example of this is sugar diabetes. The pancreas fails to produce any insulin (needed to process carbohydrates) or it doesn’t produce enough. There are two types of diabetes, easily remembered as type 1 and type 2. When no insulin is produced, the problem is called Type 1 diabetes and is usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood. When the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, it’s called Type 2 diabetes and is usually diagnosed in people over 40.

Be sure to watch for any symptoms after eating certain foods. Allergies can come and go as you get older. To combat this, doctors prescribe diets for special needs for many reasons. The body failing to digest food correctly and allergic reactions to food are two of the biggest reasons.
