This morning, I was eating breakfast at the counter in a local
diner, when a young guy, with gym logos on his clothing, sat down
next to me. Turns out he is a trainer at a local gym that I have
been in a couple of times. He was also pretty funny and he regaled
me with a couple of training stories that had me stitches.

One of the things I asked him was about his success rate at getting
people in shape. He thought about it for a moment and then said,
“I’ve never actually run the numbers, but I would say it’s about
5%.”

Believe it or not, that mirrors the percentage of successful
dieters.

He went on to say that, “In most one hour sessions (for which the
charge is $85), the client actually exercises about 10-12 minutes.
They talk more about exercising, more than they actually exercise,
and I have clients that may do two exercises in a session, do those
halfheartedly. Sometimes, it can be very frustrating, but we’re
really not allowed to tell them how it is. I’ve broken that rule a
few times and then I actually got results, but I don’t do it very
often.”

Some of his best clients are over 70. Two of them are women, who he
says could kick most men’s asses.

“They’re unbelievable,” he said, “and I wouldn’t want to run into
either of them in an alley.” He also has some men that have lost
over 100 pounds. “These guys were all referrals from the same
doctor, who put it to them gently. He said, “You can either lose the
weight, or die, you dumb SOB.” That’s what I’d like to say, but I
can’t.”

The trainer was a fat kid. He got in shape at age 17, after being
made fun of at the beach by a bunch of classmates, who got a kick
out of pinching his moobs (man boobs). He told himself that no one
would ever do that to him again. He lost 70 pounds and he’s kept it
off for over 6 years.

He wishes he could help more people, but he said they first have to
lose their “fattitude,” which he described as a combination of poor
eating habits and laziness. “Fat people,” he said, “burn so much
energy doing trivial things that there isn’t any energy left over,
to work off the lard.”

“The worst,” he said, “are the kids.” He has half a dozen kids at
least 40 pounds overweight. One of them actually pulled out a giant
Snickers bar, after doing 4 reps of lifting 10 pounds. When he took
it away, the kid sulked for the rest of the hour.

God help us!

There are dozens of ways to lower cholesterol. Taking cholesterol medicine is not one of my favorites; there are too many risks. Here are my suggestions.

They have worked for me and members of my family, as well as hundreds of other people who have written letters and posted reviews on the internet.

Change Your Diet

The relevant dietary factors are not limited to cutting out cholesterol-containing foods. In fact, the latest studies indicate that people who regularly eat eggs, which were long considered “no-no’s”, actually have healthier blood profiles than people who don’t.

No one is saying that eating more eggs is one of the ways to lower cholesterol. But, if they replace donuts or breakfast cakes containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, then they would probably be better for you.

Just because the food label says low-fat does not mean it is good for you. If it were not for all of the unnatural ingredients developed by food manufacturers, there might be no need for cholesterol medicine.

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, including soy and any of the others that might normally be healthy, are trans-fatty acids. The body lacks the enzymes necessary to efficiently metabolize trans-fatty acids. Because of that, they stay in the bloodstream for very long periods of time.

The longer they hang around, the more likely they are to become oxidized and clog the arteries. There are dietary changes that could help. Cutting out trans-fats is simply the most important.

Change Your Lifestyle

If you drink alcohol excessively, don’t get much exercise or smoke cigarettes, then you have three natural ways to lower cholesterol. Cut out the alcohol. Get more exercise. And quit smoking. It seems odd to me that doctors would prescribe cholesterol medicine to people that drink, smoke or are physically inactive. Of course, some people are lazy and really only want a drug.

Take Some Good Dietary Supplements

Research has revealed that nutrients and compounds found in some foods are just as good as cholesterol medicine. In fact, statin drugs, which are commonly prescribed for the condition, are present in a kind of Asian mushroom called the Oyster mushroom.

Pharmaceutical company reps would never tell you that eating oyster mushrooms is one of the ways to lower cholesterol. In the US, food manufacturers are not allowed to say things like that. If a food has medicinal activity, it is supposed to be classified as a drug. The effective compounds are supposed to be identified, isolated, extracted and concentrated by drug companies. Apparently, we are not smart enough to take care of our own health.

One of the drawbacks of cholesterol medicine of the statin drug type is that it inhibits the production of an important antioxidant called coenzyme Q10. Without coenzyme Q10, the muscles become weak and die. There have been numerous incidences of adverse reactions that could have only been caused by the statins.

Taking a good dietary supplement is one of the best ways to lower cholesterol. Learn more about the ingredients to look for and then do something to improve your health.

People who start a vegetarian diet might find they’re not sure how to cook without meat. A handy solution to this problem is the use of meat substitutes, specifically textured soy proteins. With these easy-to-use products, people can still enjoy their favorite meals, and with a great variety of textured soy proteins on the market, you’re sure to find just the thing for recreating your favorite dishes.

When manufacturers remove the oil from the soybeans, there is a flour that is left over that has a high protein content but is low fat. Soy oil producers wanted to be able to use more of the bean, and they researched techniques for turning the low-fat soy flour into different foods. What they found was that it could be shaped to look like meat and still retain all the nutritional value of the whole bean.

The unflavored variety lends well to adopting the flavors of the dish it is being cooked in, since there is no other ingredient but the soy flour. You can also purchase textured soy products that are flavored similarly to beef and chicken, as well as those that imitate more complex flavors. Even though they are meat flavored, the ingredients are all animal product-free, giving you the taste you are looking for while allowing you to maintain a meat-free diet.

Granules were the first type of textured soy alternatives that you could buy. They are the size and shape of granola and can be used to make foods that need to be bound together, such as burgers, or in any other dish where ground beef is typically used.

Larger sizes of textured soy that are shaped to emulate chunks of meat for stews, or chicken breasts, are also available. Typically, these are used for dishes that need larger pieces for use in kabobs, chili, or casseroles. If you enjoy fajitas and stir frys, textured soy slices are a great choice for replacing meat in these dishes.

You can find flavored textured soy products that will emulate many of your favorite foods, from bacon to hot wings. The variety is endless. There are also textured soy concentrates, similar to regular textured soy, which are lower in natural sugars and therefore more easily digested. Recently, organic textured soy appeared on the market, and although this is slightly higher in fat than other textured soy, it’s a perfect alternative for anyone looking for something made from organic beans.

Textured soy products have a long shelf life. Those that are flavored can remain on the shelf for a year and a half, requiring no refrigeration. For those that have no added flavors, you can store these for many years, although you should always follow the use by date on the packages.

Textured soy proteins can be a good choice for people who are weight conscious because these products are low in fat and high in fiber. They can also be used by individuals who need to watch their blood sugar and control it through diet.

Fat folks don’t like new underwear and that’s a fact. While new underwear might have a lot going for it, fat folks really don’t like it all that much, because it isn’t stretched out and that new elastic is too tight and tends to chafe, in addition to the regular rub.

Come summertime and hot weather, that chafe and rub can give you a wicked rash and you’ll end up dumping cups of Gold Bond Powder down your drawers, just so you can walk around. Then, you’ll finally get it stopped and the whole cycle starts over again.

Back in Brooklyn, where laundry got strung between buildings, you could learn a lot about anatomy, by what was hanging on the clothesline. Some of the drawers that dried in the wind, there, could have been used as weather balloons, or pontoon boats. It was
very hard to believe that you needed that much material to cover somebody’s rear end.

If your underwear bites, rubs and chafes…there isn’t anything wrong with it. The real problem is the model it’s on. If you are carrying a 48 waist and trying to squeeze into 36 shorts, you have the beginnings of an image problem (not to mention a probable wardrobe malfunction). And while millions wanted a look at what Janet Jackson had to offer, they probably are not going to feel the same way about whatever part of your anatomy is hanging out in public.

Take a look in the mirror. It will tell you everything you need to know about the state of your health.

For most of us, the view could use a little photoshopping. Or possibly, a lot.

But you can regain control…starting right now. There will be bumps, bruises and scratches along the way, but the benefits of being able to buy new underwear and having it actually fit, outweigh them all. Start with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, get some sunlight, some exercise and eat better. You’ll be surprised by what you can do…and how much better you’ll feel.

One of the best and tasty steps you can take to help lower your cholesterol is to add nuts to your diet. Nuts contain heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are poly-unsaturated acids. Numerous studies show that omega-3 fatty acids help to lower triglycerides and increase high density lipoproteins (HDL-the good cholesterol that helps remove the bad cholesterol from the walls of the arteries) which are two important steps in improving overall cholesterol readings.

Omega-3 fatty acids consist of a-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). They have many health benefits such as: helping to prevent heart disease, blood clots, lowering cholesterol levels, and reducing inflammation.

Omega-3 fatty acids may also help prevent blood from clotting by acting as an anticoagulant. There are several studies out that show these fatty acids also help to lower high blood pressure in some cases.

Another great thing about adding nuts to your diet is that they are vegetarian friendly. Omega-3 is found in fatty fish such as: salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and trout. While some vegetarians do allow fish in their diets, there are some strict vegans that don’t include fish or any animal products in their diets. So nuts are a wonderful way to get your omega-3′s while maintaining the integrity of a vegetarian diet.

Soybeans, tofu and flaxseed are also excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Now all nuts are not created equal, some have better health benefits than others. Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and hazelnuts have the highest amounts of unsaturated fats and the lowest amounts of saturated fats.

Brazil nuts and macadamia nuts contain high amounts of unsaturated fats; unfortunately, they also contain higher amounts of saturated fats when compared to other nuts. While these nuts are tasty and do contain omega-3 fatty acids, be aware that they are also high in unsaturated fats.

The FDA has given the approval for some nuts to be labeled as “heart-healthy” because of their ratio of unsaturated fat to saturated fat. Because of their high level of saturated fat, hazel and Brazil nuts are not allowed the “heart-healthy” labeling.

Nuts are a delicious food that can be eaten as a snack or added to cereals, oatmeal, salads and baked goods.

Of course nuts alone will not do much to lower cholesterol. You need to add nuts to a healthy, balanced diet of clean fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, lean meat and low or non-fat dairy products.

So, go get nutty!

In the April 2009 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism looked at 1600 men 65 or older in the United States to find the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and the risk factors for its occurrence.

Deficiency of Vitamin D is defined as a 25 (OH) D blood level less than 10 (mg/mL). Vitamin D insufficiency is defined as 25 (OH) D blood levels between 10 and 20 mg/mL.

Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency have been linked to the following health problems:

* Heart disease

* Stroke

* High blood pressure

* More severe asthma

* Increased risk of developing hip osteoarthritis

* Lower cognitive performance

* Osteomalacia – week muscles and week bones

Risk factors of Vitamin D deficiency include the following:

* Obesity

* Darker skin pigment

* Lack of exposure to the sun

* Use of sunscreen

* Wearing clothing with long sleeves and hats

* Over the age of 60

* Tinted windows

* Cloudy days

* Air pollution

* Geographical location

* Spring and winter seasons

* Person has fat malabsorption syndromes or inflammatory bowel disease

* Low intake of Vitamin D through fortified foods and supplements

How to stay healthy for elderly male? Eating a well-balanced diets filled with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean animal and plant-based proteins, low-fat dairy products and heart healthy fats.

1. Calcium and Vitamin D: Older adults need more vitamin D and calcium to help maintain strong and healthy bones. The FDA’s current recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin D for adults over 70 years old is 600 to 800 IU (International Unit) per day, and 400 IU per day for people over 50. But many experts in the field suggest that current recommendations may not be enough for older adults to maintain optimal health, the amount should be doubled.

2. Fiber: Fiber helps keep bowel functions normal and is good for your heart. Men older than 50 need 30 grams of fiber a day.

3. Potassium: Increasing potassium intake along with decreasing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure.

4. Healthy Fats: Most of the fats you consume should come from heart-healthy unsaturated fats.

5. Take Moringa Capsules daily.

Moringa is a tree native to many tropical countries like India, Africa, Philippines. Moringa leaves have been considered nutritional supplement for weaning infants and nursing mothers for many generations.

Moringa contains 90+ nutrients and 46 antioxidants. It contains almost all the necessary vitamin, micro and macro minerals for the cell function.

Analysis of dried leaf powder contains the following per 100 grams of edible portion, only a few are listed below:

* Calories 205

* Protein (g) 27.1

* Fat (g) 2.3

* Fiber (g) 19.2

* Calcium (mg) 2,003

* Magnesium (mg) 368

* Potassium (mg) 1,324

* Iron (mg) 28.2

* Sodium (mg) 870

* Vitamin A-Beta Carotene (mg) 16.3

* Vitamin B1 – thiamin (mg) 2.64

* Vitamin C ascorbic acid (mg) 17.3

* Vitamin B2 – riboflavin (mg) 20.5

* Vitamin E tocopherol acetate mg) 113

* Vitamin B3 – nicotinic acid (mg) 8.2

* Vitamin D – 17 times more than milk

You might remember the old children’s song Blue Tail Fly with the words “Jimmy Cracked Corn and I Don’t Care”.

Did you ever wonder why he didn’t care? Corn is a good source of fiber, vitamin B1, folate Vitamin B5 Vitamin C, Phosphorous, Manganese as well as a nutrient called beta-cryptoxanthin?

I seriously doubt that while singing the song Burl Ives thought about all the nutritional value of corn and the sweetness of this grain when he first preformed this song in the US way back in 1840.

Let’s learn a little bit of what some of these nutrients within corn have been known for.

Corn is rich in folate:

In addition to helping lower the risk of a heart attack, vascular disease or stroke, folate rich diets have also been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer and known to help prevent birth defects as well. Some studies have shown that Americans can reduce the number of heart attacks suffered each year by 10 percent when 100 percent of the daily value of folete is consumed.

The risk of lung cancer may be another disease significantly altered by consuming foods rich in beta-cryptoxanthin, the orange red carotenoid found in corn. A 27 percent reduction in lung cancer risk was found in those eating a higher amount of crytpoxanthin rich foods. This information came from a study of sixty three thousand adults followed for eight years in Shanghai, China.

When current smokers from this same group were evaluated, those who also consumed high amounts of these same foods seemed to have a much lower risk of lung cancer when compared to smokers who consumed a smaller amount of these foods.

Among corn, butternut and winter squash, tangerine, and pumpkin are a few other foods rich in beta cryptoxantin.

The nutrient Thiamin is also in corn and necessary for good mental function and brain cell health. By using Thiamin the brain makes a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine that is vital for a good memory. Studies have shown that if one maintains a healthy level of acetylcholine a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease is possible.
Other studies have shown the ability to measure powerful phytonutrients and antioxidant activity of different foods, assigning them a rating formula with a higher number the better the activity.
To give you a little perspective, Bananas measured 65, Broccoli 80, Spinach 81, Apples 98 and Corn 181.

Most of the corn eaten in the standard American diet these days just like wheat is usually processed so much that the -powers at bay- feel they need to enrich the grain because so many nutrients are lost in the processing procedure.

So, make sure to eat whole grains to get the most nutritional value.

You and your loved one sipping green tea one fine afternoon and this is the perfect setting that you found yourself into. However, have you ever really tried to dig deeper into the green tea diet, which helps set the mood of everyone who is drinking it? For many centuries, teas and its variants have been one of men’s favorite beverages.

Do you know that there are health benefits of green tea other than just an ordinary beverage? Many universities and research laboratory institutions have been studying the properties of green tea so as to prove that there is indeed health benefits associated with it. First of all, one of the substances found on green tea extracts is the antioxidant.

What is an antioxidant?

An antioxidant is a chemical molecule that will neutralize other organic or chemical compounds found in the body. By neutralization, it means it prevents the compound to be oxidized thus preventing cellular damage. There are several antioxidants present in our body including vitamin C and vitamin E.

Oxidation happens when the body is exposed to several factors such as UV radiation, pollution, smoke, excessive sugar and cholesterol levels and a whole lot more. It produces harmful substances called free radicals that are extremely harmful to the human body. Oxidation results from the withdrawal of electron from a given molecule. It brings domino effect to the body, which are usually detrimental and can cause a lot of medical conditions including malignancies and heart diseases.

What are the benefits of green tea?

*Regulation of blood sugar level. It has been proven to lower sugar levels from the blood thus preventing type I diabetes, which is a condition secondary to lack of insulin.

*Helps prevent liver cirrhosis. People who drink too much alcohol are predisposed to liver cirrhosis, which green tea actively prevents.

*Decreases obesity. One of the advantages of green tea diet that is very popular among overweight and obese people is the way that it increases metabolism, which allows you to burn excess fat considering the fact that obesity is one of the common health problems in both developed and still developing nations.

*Decreases bad cholesterol levels of the body. The good cholesterol is called the HDL or the High Density Lipids and it should be present in the body in higher percentages. The LDL or the Low Density Lipids is the complete opposite of HDL, which is the one that the teas keep in check. Excessive cholesterol is prevented by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol through the intestine.

*Prevents debilitating medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, malignancies and coronary artery blockage

*It gives your immune system a boost.

However, no matter how beneficial all of these to the body, you also have to remember that green tea contains a proportion of caffeine that will also bring ill-effects when ingested too much. Therefore, you need to drink the tea in moderation just to ease your body from the effects of stress.

Ever notice how hungry you seem to be when you’re on a diet? Or how much better food seems to look, smell and taste when dieting? Ever notice how much more you think of food during a diet than you did before the diet? Are you more tempted than usual to eat some of those “evil foods” that got you on the diet in the first place? Are you thinking about what’s for lunch and you just had breakfast 5 minutes ago? Well, there is actually a simple explanation for your having these thoughts, which is that diets make you hungry.

A more detailed explanation is that diets require you to force yourself to ignore hunger cues, which then triggers within the brain anxiety, cravings and over-consumption. Ironically enough these are all the symptoms of addictive behavior. So as you prepare to restrict your body from consuming those foods that it has come to associate with pleasure, the mind prepares itself for stress. This in turn causes you to respond with food anxiety, thus becoming obsessively preoccupied with food and showing a lack of control around it. Subsequently, this results in binge eating and ultimately your being consumed by guilt. Then the cycle begins again.

However, there’s a way to end this cycle. Try a vegan diet. Rather than having you concentrate so many of your efforts on restricting yourself from eating the foods that you enjoy, a vegan diet will instead turn your focus towards discovering and eating more of the healthy foods that you can enjoy. Rather than focusing so heavily on portion control, a vegan diet will turn your focus towards eating healthy foods to your heart’s content.

Essentially, being a vegan will start to turn your focus towards more of what you want and less on what you don’t want. You want to be fit and healthy. Well, being a vegan will inspire within you more health conscious thinking, which will manifest this desire. You want to enjoy guilt-free eating. Unsurprisingly, a vegan diet will grant this wish as well. You want an overall feeling of satisfaction. Guess what? A vegan diet will deliver this in abundance.

Being a vegan is about positively changing your thoughts and feelings about food so that you no longer view it as an enemy. Changing your thoughts in this way will change your behavior, which will change your reality. Until you begin to refrain from focusing your intentions on the undesirable, unhealthy or overweight you, which the fad diets force you to focus on, you will continue to undermine your efforts in realizing the desired you.

When it comes to weight loss, following an easy and enjoyable routine is essential. Weight loss shakes are that easy, enjoyable routine!

For me, nothing is easier and more enjoyable than using a meal replacement shake once or twice a day. They are easy to make, extremely healthy, taste great and can be made at work, home or on the go with very little fuss or mess.

Even if you do not incorporate one or two shakes into your daily routine, they can be a life-saver because many of them can be taken (or made) on the go for a quick hunger fix.

The diet industry knows this and as a result there are numerous quality products on the market to choose from.

Shakes can be used as a base for adding healthy supplements, yet mask the taste of them with something that tastes great. This way they can be fortified with all the essential vitamins and minerals you need and still be healthy and delicious.

In addition to vitamins and minerals, you can also add protein and fiber as well – making it a healthy and tasty super-food.

How to choose a shake

When determining which shake to use, make sure it fits your needs. It should have the right blend of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fiber. It should also contain additional beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants and natural cleansing agents. Some things to keep in mind when choosing a shake:

It has to be healthy (filled with all the goodness you need in one quick serving, not just a regular shake with a few vitamins added. Study the ingredient list and use your best judgment).

It must taste good (if it tastes bad, you won’t want to continue to use it – and an enjoyable routine is a must for long term success).

It fits your budget (This too is a requirement for long term routine success).

Easy to prepare (If it’s a hassle to make, you will eventually stop doing it. Many shakes can be made by just emptying a packet into a bottle of water and shaking).

And finally, it must bring you the results you are looking for. You should see and feel a difference within the first week or two of using them. Even if it is not much, but provides an easier and more enjoyable alternative to starving yourself and spending hours at the gym, then you may have found a winner.

Some last minute advice

I personally like to add fruit to mine; it actually makes it a refreshing treat as opposed to a mundane weightloss task. Fruit (in moderation) will give you plenty of healthy vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well as give you the healthy energy you need in the morning to get you going.

When I prepare a shake in the evening, I do not add fruit, but may add protein and powdered vegetable greens. This keeps the sugars down, the nutrients up and allows me to sleep easier at night.

I also personally use shakes that cleanse and Detox the body. Detox shakes will give you more energy naturally without having to resort to metabolic enhancers. Detoxing has also been shown to speed up the weight loss process.

Conclusion

When it comes to weight loss, shakes can be a life saver in more ways than one. Try incorporating a shake or two to your daily regimen for your long term health and success.

Experiment with different ones in terms of price, convenience, taste and effectiveness and I know you will find the right product that can take you to the next level.

Find the Weight Loss Shake for their nutritional needs.
